My story begins being a homeless veteran who had recurring conditions. I sought services through the VA in attempt to get my life back together. While striving for independence and a career, I started with a Work-Study program for the VA at Ernest Childers Outpatient Clinic, in Tulsa, OK. I was later selected as a Pathway Intern which gave me a better hands-on opportunity to learn and train.

I joined the Army soon after graduating from high school in 2004. I can't say that I had a blast all of the time but I did love it. I learned a great deal about myself and it has molded me into the man I am today. I will say that after being burned out from four combat tours and a failed marriage that I wanted a break so after eight long years I left the Army in December of 2012.

I've applied to over a hundred jobs since October. With incremental improvements to my resume, hours of interview practice, and advice from mentors, I received several job offers from multiple agencies! I felt debt toward my fellow veterans and gratitude for all of the opportunities I've received as a veteran and chose the perfect position for me where I can have the chance to apply my skills and honor veterans!

I'm not sure if my story would be labeled a success story, but I have had numerous journeys thru numerous "peaks and valleys", and have administered a self-imposed leveling off to enjoy the position I've attained so far. I started out as a "Security Specialist" or as they referred to us then, "Air Policeman". 4 years later I took my leave and left the active military and explored the civilian sector for any amiable pursuits.

My name is Chuck Black and I grew up in a very small town in the south. After graduating from a military academy, I went to a junior college and partied for a semester and was promptly informed not to return the following semester. Therefore, the draft was looming large and I enlisted; received my draft notice during first tour in Vietnam. After second tour in Vietnam, I opted to return to civilian life.
